ARTHROPOD BIOLOGY Characteristics of A Red-Eye Mutant of the Tarnished Plant Bug (Heteroptera: Miridae)
نویسنده
چکیده
Normal eye color of the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), is darkpurplish-black.A strainhomozygous for anewmutation, redeyecolor, wasestablishedandreared in the laboratory for 5 yr. Themutant phenotype is controlled by a single autosomal recessive allele. The gene symbol assigned to this new mutant is r. Laboratory tests showed that egg production and egg viability in the red-eye mutant females were not different from that of normal-eye females. Expression of the red-eye mutation was not found in extensive samples of wild populations in the Mississippi River Delta, and was rare in populations near Crossett, AR, where the original mutant was found. The mutant strain could be of use as a genetic marker in studying reproductive behavior and population dynamics of this important pest species.

Reduced insecticide use in cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., as a consequence of the Boll Weevil Eradication Program and the broad adoption of Bt cotton, have helped make the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), a consistent pest of cotton each year in the mid-south. Maize, Zea mays L., has been implicated as having a role in the season-long dynamics of tarnished plant bug...
متن کاملARTHROPOD BIOLOGY Analysis of Insect and Plant Colors in Digital Images Using Java Software on the Internet
Description of colors of insects and plants in biological research is often subjective and imprecise. A quantitative, statistical, and standardized method for describing colors by software analysis of digital images would be useful to researchers if readily available. An Internet Web page with JavaScript and Java applet was made that loads a digital image and analyzes the red, green, and blue (...
متن کاملPEST MANAGEMENT Tarnished Plant Bug (Heteroptera: Miridae) Populations near Fields After Early Season Herbicide Treatment
A single herbicide (Trimec or Strike 3 ) application in early season (March or April) was made to marginal areas around Þelds in 23-km test sites of the Mississippi Delta in 1999, 2000, and 2001. The herbicide was used to kill broadleaf weeds in the marginal areas that served as hosts for tarnished plant bugs, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois). The herbicide treatment caused a signiÞcant r...
متن کاملStage-Specific Effects of Population Density on the Development and Fertility of the Western Tarnished Plant Bug, Lygus hesperus
The western tarnished plant bug Lygus hesperus Knight (Heteroptera: Miridae), a major pest of cotton and other key economic crops, was tested for its sensitivity to population density during nymph and adult stages. Nymphs reared to adulthood under increasing densities in laboratory conditions exhibited incremental delays in maturation, heightened mortality rates, and reductions in body mass and...
متن کاملLygus hesperus (Heteroptera: Miridae) tolerates high concentrations of dietary nickel
Nickel hyperaccumulator plants contain unusually elevated levels of Ni (> 1 000 μg Ni/g). Some insect herbivores, including Lygus hesperus (Western tarnished plant bug), have been observed feeding on the California Ni hyperaccumulator Streptanthus polygaloides. This bug may be able to utilize S. polygaloides as a host either through its feeding behavior or by physiological tolerance of Ni. This...
